A NATURAL ESCAPE

Tropicalia is located in the El Cedro Municipal District, within the municipality of Miches, in the province of El Seibo, on the southern coast of Samaná Bay. The area of influence is bordered to the east by the Lagunas Redonda and Limón Wildlife Refuge, and to the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean, which is part of the Bancos de la Plata and La Navidad Marine Mammal Sanctuary, where, every year, around 2,000 humpback whales migrate to reproduce and give birth in its warm waters.

Miches boasts a diverse ecosystem of beaches, mountains, mangroves, forests, lagoons, and rivers. Renowned for its natural beauty, comprises the impressive shores of Playa Esmeralda and Playa Arriba; the imposing Cordillera Oriental, with its tropical prairie landscapes, and the Los Haitises National Park, a true paradise for explorers. Spanning 319 square kilometers, the park features lush hills, dense mangroves, ancient caves, Taino petroglyphs, and abundant wildlife, ideal for hikers, mountain bikers, sailors, and paddle boarders and kayakers.

MICHES: BALANCING DEVELOPMENT

In Miches, the main economic activities are subsistence agriculture, cattle ranching, artisanal fishing, and microenterprise services. However, as an emerging tourist destination, investments are increasing significantly in the area. Over the next few years, approximately 3,000 hotel rooms and 1,600 residences are expected to become operational. In this context, the Miches community faces many challenges and opportunities, such as the creation of new small and micro-businesses, the search for balance between economic growth and the management of natural and renewable resources, orderly urban development, and inclusive supply chains.

DESTINATION MANAGEMENT: PROMICHES

Tropicalia actively participates in the El Seibo-Miches Hotel and Tourism Association (PROMICHES), a non-governmental organization that unites regional tourism businesses and advocates for sustainable management of the municipality of Miches and the province of El Seibo.

At the end of 2024, during the 2nd Ordinary General Assembly of Promiches, William Phelan (President of Tropicalia) assumed the presidency of the Promiches Board of Directors for the 2024-2026 period. Given its increased activity in the region, Fundación Tropicalia allocated office space for PROMICHES to carry out its operations, facilitating collaboration with like-minded organizations to pave the way for sustainable destination management.

Additionally, Tropicalia continues to support PROMICHES with financial and human resources to strengthen its leadership and promote the sustainable management of the destination through collective action. In this regard, we collaborated with the main actions executed by PROMICHES in 2024.
